I’ve used this fabric gathering method many many times… and Marissa from http://www.raegunramblings.com does a terrific job of showing how to gather fabric with photos and explanations.
This fabric gathering technique is perfect for creating ruffles on curtains and clothes. Keep in mind that this sewing technique is in place of the ruffle presser foot. The ruffles or gathers are not secure until you sew the gathered fabric to another flat piece of fabric.
Did I say ruffle presser foot? Oh yeah I did! I have one for my Viking and it is really fun to use. Now, I’m not gonna lie… it’s a bit tricky to get used to… but it definitely saves you time and creates a terrific looking ruffle or gather. Check out what’s available for your sewing machine.
For the rest of us who don’t have the budget for a fancy ruffler… the sewing method below works great!
What she does is zig zags over a piece of crochet thread and then just pulls to gather. Since the crochet thread is thick, you don’t have to worry about it breaking… and you have tons of control so you can distribute the gathers evenly without worrying that everything will come undone.
